Chapter 6

  1. Decide what you really want & what's Preventing you from having it now.
  2. Get leverage: Associate Pain to not changing & Pleasure to experience of changing now. Create a sense of urgency. 20% of change is knowing how. 80% is knowing why you need to. Knowing you've failed to live up to your own standards is the ultimate Pain/leverage. If you want to help Somebody, you won't get leverage by Pointing out that their wrong, but rather by asking them questions to realize it themselves. It's external Pressure VS. internal Pressure.
  • Most People associate more Pain to making a change than to not changing. Make the idea of changing attractive Pleasurable
  1. interrupt the limiting Pattern. break the Pattern the moment it occurs. scramble the sensations we link to memories.
  2. create a new, empowering alternative.
  3. condition the new Pattern until its consistent. Your brain can't tell a difference between Something imagined & Something experienced. reward yourself immediately. Link Pleasure to change. reinforce it.
  • Any Pattern reinforced becomes a conditioned response. If not reinforced, dissipates.
★ - Link Pleasure to ANY behavior you want Someone to repeat.
  • Schedule reinforcement so change lasts
  • The minute you, or anyone else you want to reinforce, does something right, create an immediate reward. reinforce it constantly (ex. music).
  1. Test it. (Ecology check, pg. 146)
  • even a contract6 Step of NAC can be used for anything (146–149)
